Old-Timey/Small-Group Chamber Jazz from Victoria BC
Unknown
Event Description
Brianne de Verteuil & Her Savvy 6 will be providing you with an enchanted evening of swingin' tunes from a selection of hot 30's and 40's styled chamber jazz. You'll hear music by the John Kirby Sextet, early Duke Ellington, Artie Shaw and others; plus some of original tunes arranged in a similar style.
The group is fairly new to the the Victoria area, so we need people to come and support this endeavour.
The Savvy 6 is:
Brianne de Verteuil - alto saxophone
Julia Wakal - trumpet
Joe Hatherill - clarinet
Erin Gray - piano
Steve Sutton - double bass
Ian Erdmann - drums & cymbals
w/special guest Tamara Schwartzentruber - voice
In the 1930s, jazz WAS popular music. The tunes were catchy, the rhythms were danceable and the improvised solos were neatly packaged in a kit-of-fun. The Savvy 6 strives to reintroduce that fun and excitement to 21st century audiences. We seek to explore the bridge between the swing music of the 30's and bebop of the 40's. Those folks who enjoy tradtional jazz will probably find this group too modern. However, rest assured, cats who like modern jazz will indubitably find this group too dated. Of course, people who don't think they like jazz at all may very well find themselves attracted to the music! Of course, we don't believe any of the above. The Savvy 6 is about re-interpreting the ethos of small-group chamber jazz - swing based rhythms and colorful ensemble scoring predicated on a blend of instrumental tonalities. Because jazz is not always about the soloist, our repertoire focuses on the aspects of composition and arrangement.
We're here to help artists and arts organizations reach their audiences and each other.
