Event Description

J.S. Bach: Film Composer of the 18th Century

Not unlike today's film composers, J.S. Bach wrote the soundtrack to many of the important cultural events of 18th century Europe. His incredible output of 300 cantatas represent the pinnacle of human artistic achievement. This magnificent oeuvre, combining the deepest spiritual expression with astounding intellectual and mathematical rigour, and sometimes humour, is all the more remarkable for the fact that Bach was, like today's film composers, above all a practical musician, fulfilling the weekly duties of a church musician in Leipzig.

In this talk, Marc Destrubé, Music Director of Early Music Vancouver, will discuss why the music of Bach remains relevant in our time, and he will give a personal view of Bach's extraordinary cantatas, focussing particularly on the four to be presented by Early Music Vancouver in their December 23rd concert.
