Open Space welcomes The Ad Hoc / Ensemble, a group of improvising
musicians with members hailing from four different Canadian cities in four different
provinces. Guillaume Bourque, Christine Duncan , Jean Martin, Jean Félix Mailloux,
Dani Oore and Jesse Zubot are coming together to create a brand-new ensemble that
will tour from one side of the country to the other. This project was born out of a
collaboration between The Music Gallery in Toronto and Montreal’s Theatre La Chapelle.
The original project involved musicians and composers from Toronto and Montreal who
played together in both cities.

After the success of previous collaborations that fostered dialoge between the
Montreal and Toronto ensembles, the Ad Hoc Project was expanded to become a
coast-to-coast venture. This year, they have been joined by presenters from three
more cities: Upstreams music in Halifax, Open Space in Victoria and the Western
Front in Vancouver.

The Ad Hoc Ensemble is made up of musicians
with a solid background in improvised musics. The Ad Hoc / Ensemble, in its current
manifiestation, will played together for the first time in Montreal on April 14. Together they
have created a repertoire and are touring it across the country.

WORKSHOP
Following their concert at Open Space on Saturday, April 26 1pm, The Ad Hoc /
Ensemble will conduct a community workshop for musicians and those interested
in fostering their improvisational skills. This workshop commences at Open Space on
Sunday, April 27 1pm.

Jean Martin – Drums (Toronto)
Musician/producer Jean Martin was nominated best drummer for the 2004 National Jazz Awards and is
the recipient of the Freddy Stone Award. Jean Martin runs Barnyard Records, an independent Canadian
label that promotes new creative music. His group Barnyard Drama is an improvising duo featuring
vocalist Christine Duncan.

Dani Oore – Saxophone and things (Halifax)
Dani Oore is a composer, sound designer and saxophonist, also in demand as a performance artist and
choreographer. He is featured in many festivals, and frequently works with celebrated artists including
Alain Trudel, Jerry Granelli, Sam Rivers, Sara Shelton Mann and Barry Guy. Based in Halifax, Dani
performs in different groups, such as Kefi, Barriomatic, Upstream, Symphony Nova Scotia and is the
frontman and composer for Nova Scotia’s most outrageous party-band, Gypsophilia.

Christine Duncan – Voice (Toronto)
A musical chameleon with a near five octave range, Duncan uses her voice as an instrument, exploring
its full tonal, timbral and textural range. She has recorded and/or collaborated with Bob Murphy, Hugh
Fraser, Miles Black, Veda Hille, Paul Plimley and many others. Recently she performed in 120 Songs for
the Marquis de Sade, a new opera premiere, written by Peter Hannan and Peter Hinton. She is a member
of Barnyard Drama with Jean Martin.

Jesse Zubot – Violin (Vancouver)
Jesse Zubot is a founding member of the acoustic-roots ensemble Zubot & Dawson and is also a
member of the Great Uncles of the Revolution. Both of these recording acts are Juno Award winners.
Recently, Jesse has delved heavily into the world of creative and improvised music. In the past few years
he has performed and recorded with the likes of François Houle, Eugene Chadbourne, Evan Parker, Fond
of Tigers, Dave Douglas, Peggy Lee, Dylan van der Schyff, Tony Wilson, Fred Frith, Henry Kaiser and
many others. In 2005, Jesse started up his own label, Drip Audio.

Guillaume Bourque – Clarinet, Bass Clarinet (Montreal)
Guillaume Bourque enrolled at the Conservatoire de musique du Québec in Montréal in 1997. There,
he received training in contemporary music and as a chamber and orchestra musician. While studying
Guillaume learned about jazz and world music in his work with several groups, including Manouche,
with which he has recorded three albums; Hot club de ma rue, a Django Reinhardt tribute band, and,
Ironico Orkestra, a duo with accordion player Luzio Altobelli. On a regular basis he works with various
composers and producers, including Robert Marcel Lepage and Jean Derome.
