The garage rock band Hefe (reviewed in The Province last October) is hosting its Second Annual Mardi Gras Mash-Up, created for revellers of all creed and colour. Focusing on highlighting the exotic and eclectic of Vancouver’s performers, The evening intends to empowering all to wear masks, cut loose, and live in a pre-Katrina New Orleans for just one night.

On Saturday, February 2, 2008 at the NEW Balmoral, Hefe will be hosting a Showcase of Alternative Entertainment with a flair for traditional and current live music dance scenes.

Hefe was founded in 2004 by Canadian scientists with a desire to express from within. Their vision for this event is to create a celebration and showcase of some of Vancouver’s best underground entertainers and bring their power and seduction to mainstream attention and markets. The growing ‘anywhere but Granville’ movement has bolstered interest in the Downtown Eastside with increasing demand for ‘real’ music. This event is an attempt to fill that void, by creating a theatrical event inviting various music styles and dancers, all under the umbrella of a Dixieland celebration.

The Mardi Gras Mash-Up’s Second Annual Event takes us to a larger venue and a more diverse lineup than 2007’s full capacity event. The Mash-Up will combine the sensuality, intrigue and art of burlesque dance with the whirling sounds of swingtime, ska and funk-rock. The event is designed to showcase local talent in an inclusive and positive atmosphere for attendees. It will be a night of stunning live performances and an authentic, interactive dixieland march through the crowd.

The event will be a fabulous extravaganza. Bands and dancers will perform on a full-size stage with professional stage hands and lighting. The entire venue will be done up in a bourbon Street style. Beads of all styles and colors will be passed around and masquerade has been strongly encouraged. Attention to detail from experiencing the authentic New Orleans Mardi Gras will be brought out in the venue. Our mission is to protect the future of the local music and burlesque dance scene. We believe in the power of music and the strength of diversity.
