Event Description
Students of the VCM Opera Studio present lightly staged excerpts from operas set in ancient times, as written by composers of the 17th, 18th, and 20th centuries. These classic stories of murder, mayhem, lust, intrigue, grief, and vengeance are as relevant today as in ancient times.
In Claudio Monteverdi's 1642 opera Incoronazione di Poppea (The Coronation of Poppea), the seductive Poppea schemes to become wife of the Roman Emperor Nero (the same scoundrel who is said to have fiddled while Rome burned). Handel's 1724 opera Julius Caesar is set in the Egypt of Cleopatra. The evening also features music from two operas by 20th century composer Benjamin Britten: the darkness of The Rape of Lucretia and the whimsy and farce of A Midsummer Night's Dream, based on Shakespeare's text. Finally, there will be something for everyone with music from Stephen Sondheim's wonderful romp, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.
