Since the release of his Mercury Prize-winning debut Hour of the Bewilderbeast in 2000, Damon Gough—a.k.a. Badly Drawn Boy—has been one of the most acclaimed singer-songwriters and performers in the U.K. Through a succession of acclaimed albums and shows that brought out the raging rocker within (Gough is admittedly a huge Bruce Springsteen fan), Badly Drawn Boy has been responsible for some of the catchiest pop tunes, as well as some of the most forlorn ballads and outright rockers, of the last six years.
The latest Badly Drawn Boy album, Born in the UK—note the salute to the Boss’s Born in the U.S.A.—finds the Mancunian songsmith in a mood to make a Big Statement, and he does so, gloriously, on the title track, an epic, magisterial rocker that sums up the last few decades of life in his homeland. Elsewhere, Gough delivers superlative pop in “Degrees of Separation” and ballads both romantic (“Walk You Home Tonight”) and rueful (“Nothing’s Going to Change Your Mind”). Born in the UK is another exciting, anything-can-happen chapter in a career that includes such milestones as the soundtrack to About a Boy, as well as the discs Have You Fed the Fish? Considering Badly Drawn Boy barely toured or promoted its last album, 2004’s more personal One Plus One is One, anticipation for a new BDB North American tour is high.
