Montreal-based jazz vocalist Ranee Lee has one of the most enviable careers in Canada. Although this award-winning actress (stage and screen), songwriter, and children’s author has enough creativity for several artists, it is as a jazz chanteuse that she is most widely celebrated. She has 10 CDs to her credit, latest being 2009’s Lives Upstairs. There is a long list of jazz luminaries she has performed and recorded with, including Clark Terry, Oliver Jones, Herb Ellis and Red Mitchell. Strongly influenced by Billie Holiday and Dinah Washington, Lee is a mature, mainstream performer with real stage presence and a warmly expressive style: this velvet-voiced singer relishes standards and Broadway classics and makes them her own. Lee performs with Richard Ring guitar, Morgan Moore bass, Taurey Butler piano and Dave Laing drums. It is an honour to have this great vocal artist return to TD JazzFest. “Lee combines the swinging energy and deep feeling of legendary jazz singers with a natural communicative spirit.” – AllAboutJazz.com
