NOMO, who hails from Ann Arbor, Michigan, is an ambitious Afrofunk- meets-jazz ensemble. Primarily inspired by Nigerian superstar Fela Kuti, NOMO started up several years ago and as they matured more of their own ideas percolated through all those throbbing Afro-Pop beats and elaborate horn charts. Their two most recent albums – Ghost Rock and Invisible Cities – reveal a band that has embraced a strong feeling for rock and jazz, for tight structure and glorious disorder. With a few nods to the dirty cooking jazz jams of Charles Mingus and Sun Ra, these six musicians create catchily melodic tunes as much as killer grooves and big beats. Group leader Elliot Bergman keyboards/tenor saxophone/vocals plays alongside longtime band mates Quin Kirchner and Erik Hall drums, Jake Vinsel bass, Justin Walter trumpet and Dan Bennett baritone sax. “NOMO has established their own brand of future funk, built on hypnotic grooves.” –Pitchfork
