The only thing certain about a Medeski, Martin and Wood concert is how uncertain it is. At any given moment the improvisational trio could launch into a freeform jazz odyssey or rocking funk workout.
Three musicians with astonishing jazz chops, the band has established itself as one of the most creative acts on the concert circuit. Now, with its tenth album End of the World Party (just in case), recorded with producer John King of the Dust Brothers (Beck, Beastie Boys), MM+W celebrate 13 years of their phenomenal partnership with their most accomplished set yet. The essence of their improvisational wizardry has been distilled into four- and five-minute tracks that form the catchiest songs of the band’s career, while still eschewing standard pop music structures. Elements of sci-fi film music, Serge Gainsbourg, ‘70s rock and soul, jazz and Latin are all mixed into a fascinating blend of musical influences, psychic instrumental interplay and sophisticated songwriting.
Medeski, Martin and Wood regularly sell out concert halls, theatres and clubs, and have been hailed as among the best improvisational act of its generation; End of the World Party, and the series of dates supporting it, confirms their status, and begins a new chapter in the New York-spawned band’s storied life.
