Malefaction were formed in a basement in the early '90s and dedicated themselves to the metal lifestyle. Leather jackets, hockey haircuts, beer and harleys became synonomous with the band and their image.
Starting out as a glam cover band they quickly changed musical styles once Earache starting signing death metal bands. Realizing too late that they had missed the death metal boat, Malefaction decided to go hardcore after hearing the Earth Crisis "firestorm" ep. Their new direction saw them tour most of North America and actually have suckers... I mean diy labels put out their records.
But even with all this hardcore cred people decided it would be better to stay at home than witness the 'faction live. Towns that were unsupportive of Malefaction soon found themselves on the "We'll never play there again" list. At the top of the list is Regina, with Guelph running a close second.
Malefaction have put the past behind them both musically and image wise. In an attempt to be original (as well as sell more records) Malefaction labelled themselves as "black metal influenced hardcore art." This self description fooled the hardcore kids but did not fool the bangers at all. Still both parties seemed to dig the music regardless of what style it was supposed to be. So where will Malefaction end up in this new millenium? Probably jail or rehab.
