“No other group in the world has such a commanding interaction between the grooves of the 21st-century dance and the acoustic jazz piano tradition.”—Times
(London)Hailing from Stockholm, Sweden, this stunning trio has performed at the TD Canada Trust Vancouver International Jazz Festival on several occasions in recent years. Steeped in classic acoustic jazz and informed by such electric styles as European art music, drum’n’bass, and rock, E.S.T. bridges the gap between traditional and contemporary music without resorting to the endless doodling prevalent in the jam-band scene. Combining a straight-ahead jazz sensibility with snappy grooves, electronic distortion, and multi-layered textures, E.S.T. (Esbjorn Svensson piano, bDan Berglund bass, Magnus Ostrom drums) has attracted a strong following of both jazz fans and pop-oriented listeners. Since 1993, the award-winning trio has recorded 11 CDs, including the current release Live in Hamburg (ACT). Germany’s FonoForum summarizes the band’s output as “contemporary jazz at its best.” Deeply lyrical, profoundly modern, and beautifully balancing the tradition/innovation quotient, E.S.T. are sound pioneers for the twenty-first century.
