“The most exciting pianist to come along since Herbie Hancock.”—Pat Metheny
Brad Mehldau is among the most compelling, adventurous, and innovative musicians in the jazz scene. The classically trained pianist/composer first drew notice with tenor saxophonist Joshua Redman’s band in the early ’90s. He subsequently recorded a slew of highly acclaimed albums and is now firmly established as one of the major voices in the music. Along the way he has worked with legends like Wayne Shorter, John Scofield, Michael Brecker, and Willie Nelson, as well as contemporaries like Christian McBride and Kurt Rosenwinkel. In 2006 he released a recording for voice and piano called Love Sublime (Nonesuch) with the great classical soprano Renee Fleming. Shortly thereafter, he teamed up with guitarist Pat Metheny for duo and quartet recordings. Blessed with a natural technique and fervent imagination, Mehldau is a master of mood and colours, alternating introspection and fury, classicism and swing. His romantic, lyrical style is rhythmically creative yet subtle. With Larry Grenadier bass and Jeff Ballard drums, his trio mixes jazz standards and originals with brilliant interpretations of songs by Radiohead, Nick Drake, and Paul Simon, and they achieve what Time magazine calls “an almost spiritual resonance, chords echoing like amens.” A tour de force not to be missed!
