Bobby Hutcherson
One of the most widely recorded jazz masters in the world, vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson brings a brilliant ear for harmony and melody, an exciting sense of rhythm and a shimmering tone to all of his compositions. After working with artists like Charles Lloyd while just a teenager in L.A., Hutcherson was soon performing with 1960s superstars such as Jackie McLean, Archie Shepp, Eric Dolphy and Herbie Hancock. Rated as one of the world’s best vibists by the International Jazz Critic’s Poll, Hutcherson has created seminal recordings with everyone from Dexter Gordon to Sonny Rollins. Now, after a half-century of inspired music-making, his discography and performance credits and ongoing commitment to jazz are almost unparalleled. His latest projects include working with pianist McCoy Tyner and B3 master Joey DeFranceso. In his long awaited return to Victoria (40 years!), Hutcherson will be performing with the brilliant pianist Renee Rosnes, whose ‘60s-style romanticism and potent, rhythmically charged improvisations will make her an ideal complement. The rhythm section includes drummer Willy Jones and bassist Dwayne Burno.
