Sasha Dobson, Jesse Harris & Richard Julian
JUNE 27, 28 Performance Works
This knockout triple treat features some of the best singer/songwriters on the planet. Inspired by her heroes Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan, California-native Sasha Dobson makes powerful, uplifting music. Her new album, Modern Romance (Secret Sun)—a fusion of Brazilian groove, pop, and jazz—showcases Dobson’s seasoned vocal chops and captures the very heart of an artist who simultaneously respects tradition and upends convention. It’s a fine collection of originals and genre-bending covers of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Modern Romance and Duke Ellington’s Mood Indigo. In concert, she’ll be joined by Norah Jones cronies Jesse Harris and Richard Julian. Songster/guitarist Jesse Harris became a household name in 2003 when he won the Grammy Award for Song Of The Year for Norah Jones’ rendition of Don’t Know Why. Many artists including Madeleine Peyroux, Sasha Dobson, Willie Nelson, and Cat Power have recorded his songs. His latest album, Mineral (Secret Sun), features jazzers Kenny Wollesen and Larry Goldings. New York-based singer/songwriter/guitarist Richard Julian made his major label debut in 2006 with Slow New York (Manhattan Records/EMI), introducing what Harp magazine calls “nimble lyricism” and “keenly observational songs” to a broad international audience. The Washington Post called it “one of the year’s best albums.” He has also enjoyed success as a member of The Little Willies (Norah Jones, Jim Campilongo) and as a sideman for Sasha Dobson.
