About

Denis Colin Trio with Gwen Matthews

Label: Hope Street
One of France’s most
accomplished jazz groups, the
Denis Colin Trio is led by a bass
clarinetist of impeccable skill and
improvisational originality. Colin
is accompanied by classically
trained cellist Didier Petit, famed
for his experimental projects (and
27-album discography).
Grounding the group is percussionist
Pablo Cueco, who plays
the zarb (a Persian equivalent to
the dumbek). Compared by one
critic to the group Oregon – if
they’d originated from Tehran –
the always-engaging Trio can be
both moody and propulsive as
they reinvent the jazz canon. For
their debut performance in
Victoria, they are appearing with
gospel/blues singer Gwen
Matthews.
“One of the most poetic groups in
contemporary jazz. A magnificent
sound.” –Télérama
