sur
Formed by Mark Bridgeman and Kim Girling in November of 2004 while attending the University of British Colombia, Sur began as a place for the two budding songwriters to exchange ideas and improve their craft. They decided to share vocal duties and writing quickly progressed to recording. Mutual friend and fellow student Steven Klein heard some of their rough recordings, and asked to join the group both as a second guitarist and to help recording. All of Sur's songs were recorded in their dorm room with any non-guitar instruments added later on Steven's computer. Sur's music blurs the singer-songwriter genre, adding rock and electronica influences to the mix, creating a more varied and textured sound. They are characterized by the constant need to experiment while keeping within the classic pop song structure, focusing on hooks as much as inventive soundscapes. In the coming year, Sur will continue to develop their songwriting skills, while diving head first into the thriving west coast music scene.
