Za'tar
since circa 2004
Under the Artistic Direction of World Music Gary
Cohen Za'atar combines spicy Middle-Eastern and
Balkan rhythms (featuring the doumbek or Egyptian tabla and the duholla) with vocals, flute, clarinet, guitar, and baglama (Greek stringed instrument) to create traditional Mediterranean sounds played in fresh, exiting, and original ways. Gary has created a unique
guitar strumming style reminicient of the oud,
the Arabic ancestor of the mandolin.
Za'tar has featured at the Egyptomania exhibit
at the Royal British Columbia Museum in Victoria, and has backed up the headliner belly dancer Yasmina at the Danse Orientale show at the McPherson show in Victoria.
Za'tar is available for theme nights, dances, concerts, festivals, and special events.
