About

Mederic Collignon w. Jus de Bocse

It will be jazz music with a twist as French trumpet player Médéric Collignon makes his debut in Victoria at the TD JazzFest. After learning to play trumpet at the tender age of five it’s not surprising he had a spectacular academic career en route to becoming a professional musician. This multiple award winner is wildly eclectic, having been influenced as much by funk and jazz-rock as the works of composer Oliver Messiaen. He has collaborated with a diverse array of French musicians and has several CDs out. Known for his shouting, his deliberately trashy bouts and his flashes of genius, he has taken on this monument, without real irreverence, taking Miles Davis’s version as a starting point, but as we could expect, with some insolence. Backing him is his power trio Jus de Bocse: Frederic Chiffoleau double bass, Philippe Gleizes drums, and Frank Woeste fender rhodes. The result is disarming, and has attracted a lot of reactions. It is a kind of artificial, multicolored opera, dense and powerful.
