About

Patrick O'Dell's Skateboard Showcase

Patrick O’Dell is a downtown New York-based photographer. Professionally, Patrick has traveled the world as a senior staff photographer for Thrasher and currently holds the title of Photo Editor for Vice Magazine in New York. O’Dell shoots skaters skating, hangers hanging, and up-too-late, out-too-often night dwellers doing what comes naturally. Somehow amid all the black eyes, crowded dance floors, beat-up hotel rooms, and beautiful famous ladies, O’Dell manages to keep the scene honest. This candid intimacy with his subject matter combined with his poetic eye for finding beauty in even the grimiest of scenes give Patrick’s work a natural style that is truly his own.

Olio: Is there anything in particular you look forward to about coming to Vancouver?
Patrick O’Dell: I always feel welcome there for some reason. Everyone is always nice.

Olio: Aside from skate-stoppers, is there anything that gets your goat at all about Van?
PO: The border guards. They are a nightmare.

Olio: Do you know what may or may not be in the mix for season 4 of Epicly Later'd?
PO: I have a dream list: Natas, Hensely, Gonz, Grosso.

Olio: I think the best part about your photography is how often you share it, and its
consistency in style. Your photography’s authenticity seems to come largely
from spontaneity, but that’s probably not entirely true. What are you thinking about and
looking for when you are taking pictures or editing for the ones that you want to post on Epicly Later’d?
PO: I want them to look like they are from a photo album. Even if they aren't.

Olio: Do you have a particular song stuck in your head today?
PO: County Line by Cass McCombs.

Olio: Does it ever stop being fun? It definitely looks pretty fun from a fan’s angle.
PO: It’s usually fun. And now I help Altamont think of ideas and that is very fun.

Olio Festival & Altamont present "Skateboard Showcase: A Selection of Photographs from Patrick O'Dell” on Friday September 23rd, 2011 at Antisocial Skateboard Shop (‪2337 Main Street‬). 8 PM-12 AM. Artist in Attendance.
