Grammy winner Christian McBride was an internationally acclaimed bassist before he was 20, and has continued to evolve as musician, bandleader, composer and educator. Now in his late 30s, the well-seasoned McBride has been keeping busy of late, whether it’s touring with Chick Corea and John McLaughlin or performing with Diana Krall and Sting. Most recently this clear-toned bassist extraordinaire has put together an acoustic quintet named Inside Straight. Their slyly titled debut release, 2008’s Kind of Brown, features dazzling solos and ensemble performances of the kind of straight-ahead jazz that audiences are clearly hungry for. From big grooves reminiscent of ‘60s era Herbie Hancock to tricky bebop tunes executed with surefooted élan, Brown cooks in a way that makes listeners sentimental for the glory days of Blue Note. Their hip, electrifying live shows are even more popular! His all-star band includes Steve Wilson saxophone, Peter Martin piano, Warren Wolf vibraphone, and Ulysses Owens drums.
