“No instrument in jazz is more essential than the bass, both backbone and heartbeat, and Charlie Haden is its master.”—Francis Davis, Atlantic Monthly
Bassist extraordinaire, composer, bandleader, teacher, and Grammy Award winner Charlie Haden is a musician of imaginative, intuitive, and communicative powers. Over the past five decades his big, warm, rich tone has appeared on over 500 albums, and he has won numerous readers’ and critics’ polls for best acoustic bass player. Haden has worked and recorded with Ornette Coleman, John Coltrane, Keith Jarrett, Pat Metheny, Michael Brecker, Kenny Barron, and his own Liberation Music Orchestra. Other items on his recent agenda include recordings and tours with Egberto Gismonti, Paul Motian, Geri Allen, Dino Saluzzi, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, and Carlos Paredes. Charlie’s acclaimed Quartet West, featuring Ernie Watts tenor saxophone, Alan Broadbent piano, and Rodney Green drums, shows him at his lyrical peak. The music evokes the Raymond Chandler, film noir atmosphere of Hollywood in the ’40s and ’50s with the tunes ranging from lush and romantic reworkings of standards by Charlie Parker, Bud Powell, and Glenn Miller, to originals, some of which are inspired by traditional folk tunes Haden sung as a boy. Quartet West reflects Haden’s fascination with a time when, as he told Down Beat magazine, “popular music had deeper values.”
