June 19th we set out on a mission to interview Hank III at his sold out show at The Venue, Vancouver BC. We managed to get a hold of him after the show where we went back to his bus for the interview. My tape recorder wasn’t working and Spider realized his wasn’t going to work either while we were on the bus. When Hank asked if the tape was working Spider replied, “Yes”. He knew before I did that this was going to turn into shooting the shit, rather than an interview, fortunately for us he was wrong. The way we actually got the interview is that Spider’s phone dialed his daughter’s friend’s mom’s answering machine by mistake in his pocket. Spider’s daughter later told him the next day that she saw on her facebook “Who is Terri Platt and why is my answering machine full of a Hank III interview?” Thanks to luck and the lady whom never erased the message we bring you an interview with Hank III a long time coming!
Q: What are your views in meeting the fans after the show?
A: Is the old country way. You play your show and you say hello it makes your fans feel connected.
Q: How many bands do you have and what instruments do you play?
A: Arson Anthem I play drums. Super Joint Ritual I play bass. Attention Deficit Domination I play everything. Arson Anthem has a new full-length record getting ready to come out. Super Joint Ritual is done for now and (new project) A.D.D is just getting off the ground.
Q: Are you still on Curb Records?
A: Four more months and I'm done.
Q: Are you going to start your own label?
A: Well I’m gunna try if I can make the connections happy that's the hardest part.
Q: How do you compare your fan base between both bands?
A: Our fan base for a country audience is one of the more unique fuckin open minded diverse audiences out there. It took us many many years to get what we have and were very proud to have all the different genres of people that are coming out.
Q: What are your favorite metal and country bands?
A: Oh boy that’s a hard one you got from Melvin’s to Pentagram. Oh there's just too many to answer on that it's just a huge variety of people I like. I’m into country you know Wayne Hancock, Dale Watson, oh just too many to name.
Q: What do you think about David Allen Co?
A: Oh he has been like a second grandfather to me.
Q: So you believe in Satan? What’s your view on god?
A: Well no I believe in light and dark. People have labeled me as a Satanist. I believe more in the Indian way then anyway. I balance it out. My grandfather spoke about the light so it was my mission to speak about the dark for a little while and as far as just joining one certain club Christ or Satan I’m too open minded just to join one.
Q: The song Dick in Dixie on the album Lovesick, Broke and Driftin had some complications can you tell us about that?
A: Well I’m the very first country artist ever to have a parental advisory. Cussin is just me that’s just what we do and we weren't trying to make any headlines with the parental advisory we were just being ourselves. From where I come from it was hard to get that to happen but we were be able to do it.
A: How much of your writing comes from personal experiences?
A: I say 90% of it. Songs like Number Five and Punch Fight Fuck I just put myself in GG’s shoes for a little bit and paid respects for all of what he did.
Q: Tell us about the connection between your personal experiences and the songs you write like D Ray White, that's a very personal song?
A: I had to go there and feel it and meet em and that's just respects to the family you know I just felt connected to those people. Hank Williams was found dead in West Virginia and there's that whole connection. I really respected the creativity of the White Family there's a lot of darkness there with the addiction and stuff like that but there's also a lot of creativeness in their dancing and music and stuff that they do.
Q: Some people have said to me what the fuck does three shades of black mean?
A: Most of the metal kids are wearing three shades of black, black shoes, black pants, black shirt, that's gotta end bringing the metal into the country world.
Q: Is Arson Anthem going to be going on tour?
A: We only do a handful of shows every now and then.
Q: How’s Canada treating you?
A: Oh it's good man. It’s always a blast everywhere we play.
Q: What’s your fucking poison?
A: Ahhh well probably more the pills than the alcohol the alcohol slows me down a little too much just doing the day after day after day shows.
