The Isotopes CD REVIEW
The Isotopes
Heatseeker
Kai Tolley
Throwing The Isotopes just-released 7 inch on the platter is like taking a time machine back to 1977. The Isotopes play pop punk reminiscent of The Dead Boys with a touch of The Riverdales, and being named after the baseball team from the Simpsons definitely gives them a license to wear baseball hats and write catchy songs about baseball. These songs are solid base hits. For me the home run is “Poison in the Clubhouse”, which I found myself singing along to upon first listen. Evan October, formerly of the Jolts, has a singing style that reminds me of Ben Weasel after Screeching Weasel broke up. Justin Safely (also of the Spinoffs) is half of a solid punk rhythm section with Tony Hustle (aka Tony Dallas), the kick ass drummer of the SSRI’s, Junior Major and Boogie Monster. In each band Dallas’ drumming throws a unique curve ball, making it look as easy as changing hats. The Isotopes Heatseeker is solid all the way; all four tunes are smoking pop punk that will make you old school mosh around your living room enough to make the vinyl skip.
