Adam Basterfield is a multi-faceted instrumentalist and singer-songwriter. A diploma graduate of the Victoria Conservatory of Music jazz studies program, he has established himself in multiple musical roles and genres.
Adam started playing acoustic guitar at age 11, then got serious when he picked up electric guitar at age 14. His instruments also include keyboards, bass, drums, percussion, melodica and various other instruments at which he is largely self taught. His process of learning new instruments on his own terms is largely assisted by his sense of perfect pitch (which has led to many annoying "guess this note?" quizzes from fellow musicians.)
In 2006, Adam joined The Caroline Spence Band (later renamed Crimson Star), a progressive folk outfit in which he served primarily as lead guitarist, beginning his lengthy collaboration with partner, Caroline Spence. Also, since 2008, Adam has been a member of Pigs, Victoria's highly regarded Pink Floyd tribute, in which he takes on the keyboard and vocal duties of the late Richard Wright.
In 2010, Adam and Caroline refocused their efforts towards progressive art rock, founding Spaceport Union with drummer Taylor Charles and soon adding bassist Mike Ross, and in 2012, adding current bassist Aaron St. Arnault. Adam serves as co-frontman of the band alongside Caroline, taking center stage in the group's eclectic and often intense stage shows. His songwriting for the band netted a Vancouver Island Music Award nomination for Male Songwriter of the Year in 2012, followed in 2013 by a win for Song of the Year for ‘Fueled By Consequence,’ the first single from the band’s debut full-length album, ‘Flirting with the Queen’.
