Event Description

Team Hegdal is Norwegian saxophonist/clarinettist Eirik Hegdal’s quartet which serves as a vehicle for his playful, innovative, genre-busting, joyful compositions. Their third record (Volume 3) won the Spellemannprisen, the Norwegian equivalent to the Grammy awards.

Eirik is the former artistic director of the Trondheim Jazz Orchestra, in which he collaborated with such stars as Chick Corea, Joshua Redman and Jason Moran and which has released several albums of his large group compositions. He has also collaborated with such heavy musicians as Jeff Parker, Ingebrigt Håker-Flaten, Martin Küchen, and Per Zanussi.

Drummer Gard Nilssen’s Acoustic Unity trio has released records on ECM and Odin records, and his 17 piece Supersonic Orchestra has released recordings on Odin and WE Jazz. He’s also a member of free rock trio Bushman’s Revenge and free jazz quartet Cortex.Bassist Ole Morten Vågan has performed and recorded with the Trondheim Jazz Orchestra, Motif, the Håvard Wiik Trio, the Maciej Obara Quartet, and many others.

Based in Oslo, Norwegian bass player Ole Morten Vågan has been a central part of the scandinavian jazz and impro community for the last decade, performing with among others Motif, The Deciders, Håvard Wiik Trio, The Trondheim Jazz Orchestra, Maria Kannegaard Trio, Andratx, Bugge Wesseltofts NCOJ, Maciej Obara Int. Quartet, Audun Kleive´s Generator X and more recently also Joshua Redman Trio with Jorge Rossy and Ole Morten Vagan .

Saxophonist/bass clarinettist Atle Nymo has been a member of Motif, Chrome Hill, IPA, Trondheim Jazz Orchestra and many others.

We are very much looking forward to this one. The Team Hegdal records have been on heavy rotation since they reached out to us to play in Victoria.

Allotropes is the trio of bass clarinettist/saxophonist Shane Krause, bassist Trav Short and drummer Miles Fuller. Their music is a mix of Krause’s compositions, free improvisations and classic tunes by free jazz legends including Ornette Coleman, Roswell Rudd and Don Cherry.

Shane Krause’s past bands have been featured at the Vancouver International Jazz festival and he was a performer in Anthony Braxton’s 2010 Sonic Genome Vancouver project. He has performed with well known improvisers including Mats Gustafsson and Tatsuya Nakatani.

Miles Fuller is a drummer, improviser and composer from Victoria BC, located on the unceded territory of the Lekwungen People. An adept performer, he appears regularly as both side-man and leader in venues across Canada. Miles’ playing is greatly informed by the jazz and improvised music tradition and has been praised for its emotive nature.Miles is currently working with a number of groups, including the Monik Nordine Trio, the David Santana Quintet, Actual Human People, and Scrap Arts Music.

Trav Short is a double bassist and orchestral string technician, who was a long-time member of the Wes Carroll trio and runs the Swing Low Strings repair shop. He’s kind of like the Hunchback of Notre Dame for Centennial United Church but taller and with better posture.
