The GVYO opens its 34th season with J.S. Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D minor. Originally composed for organ, this iconic work is instantly recognizable: its dramatic rolling chords have since been heard in countless films, rock compositions, and video games! Franz Liszt dedicated his 12 symphonic poems to his beloved Princess Carolyne zu Sayn-Wittgenstein. Festklänge was written to celebrate their wedding, and unites Hungarian and Polish themes in recognition of their respective backgrounds. Sadly, the wedding never took place, but the music continues to capture our hearts. Edvard Grieg’s Symphonic Dances weaves folk melodies of his native Norway into four dance-like movements, each lively, lyrical, and uplifting.
