Event Description

The Kelly Green Kollective (KGK) are comprised of Victoria-based painters Roy Green and PJ Kelly. Their works are distinctly non-minimal and post-conceptual as art-historical and popular culture imagery collides with abstract strategies and textual elements creating a reservoir of painterly pleasure and visual provocation. The KGK hope to engulf the viewer in their quantum jungle of tactile data extrapolating a tantric sensorium of the endearingly preposterous and the strategically inexplicable. Layers of acrylic, ink and collage intermingle on the decorated rectangles of canvas or paper. As they are not yet ready to repair the fabric of our national discourse, they nonetheless are committed to their vision of excess, proud to be the industrious dung- beetles of the Victoria art world. Cultural watchdogs of the Pacific Rim, they offer a plethora of mixed media paintings and sculptures that re-purpose previous works in an analog paradigm of hand-crafted objects.

Roy Green is a painter, poet and performance artist based in Victoria, BC. Since graduating with Honours from the Emily Carr College of Art and Design in 1984, he has exhibited his work internationally. He has received 4 BC Arts Council grants, a Canada Council Grant and is represented in several private and public collections including the Canada Council Arts Bank, the Richmond Art Gallery, le Centre des Arts Baie-St-Paul, the Comox Valley Art Gallery, Vancouver Island University and Camosun College.

PJ Kelly is multi-media artist based in Victoria, BC. She graduated with a BA in psychology from the University of Victoria and studied painting at the Victoria School of Art. She has exhibited her work at various venues in Victoria such as Polychrome Fine Arts, the Ministry of Casual Living , arc-hive gallery, the Slide Room Gallery, Errant Art Space, the Martin Batchelor Gallery, The Atrium and Trounce Alley Gallery. She was a founding member of the Polka-Dot Octopus Collective , the Gang of Four and the Kelly Green Kollective.

As a collective we endeavour to deepen our own understandings of how we are implicated in the history and in the present ongoing project of settler colonialism. As members of the fifty fifty arts collective we continually responsibilize ourselves to the complex kind of space that is the fifty fifty which hosts and facilitates the dissemination of the ideas and work of others.
