Shearing Pinx play very noisy post-hardcore mixed with jazz influences, reminding me of bands that came out of D.C in the late 80's and early 90's like Hoover and Monorchid but with a jazzier edge, with more starts and stops then those bands had. At some points during the album the band threatens to fall apart to the untrained ear but, for those in the know, it's organized chaos. I enjoyed how unpredictable and inventive this album is. The opening song "Smarts" blew me away and set the tone for the rest of the album, which is dark and seething with energy that threatens to burst through the speakers. The song "Knife Fall" reminds me of The Daughters Hell Songs. Shearing Pinx also remind me of a more talented Lydia Lunch, whom I adore. If I were to pick a favorite song I would have to say "Hate Rider" since it is one of the more unpredictable and choatic songs. This album has been on heavy rotation on my cd player.
