Message from Darren Bertuccio, a woodworking teach at Tree of Life Nature Playschool:
Presenting small sculptures from the children ages 3 to 5 years old from the Tree of Life Nature Playschool located in Esquimalt, British Columbia. The outdoor playschool utilizes the beautiful little beaches and coastline around Esquimalt as the setting for the children’s outdoor classroom. All of the sculptures featured in this show were created using real hand tools under the guidance of their teacher. Great care is taken not to interfere with the creative process while the children are building their creations while ensuring the children are using the tools in a safe way. The results are surprisingly refreshing, raw and real. A young child can do amazing things when given with a chance.
The woodworking component at the Tree of Life Nature Playschool is unique in that the woodworking teacher transports all materials and tools to the outdoor classroom on a cargo bike. What started as an experiment to help calm a few children who needed hands-on physical activity, has evolved into a major component of the daily activities the children experience at the Tree of Life Nature Playschool.
The numerous cognitive, physical and confidence building benefits of building with wood evident. Over the past 8 years the Playschool has found that working with wood has engaged the children longer than any other medium. Working with wood in an outdoor environment encourages the imaginative process which is so important in the early years of childhood learning.
“I am just there to help the children realize their creations. For a while I tried to teach the children how to build birdhouses but they immediately wanted to spin things upside down and sideways and so I decided to just let them have their way. All I need to do is to provide them with the materials and tools and make sure that they are using the tools safely. The results are something so surprising and beautiful that I wanted to show the world what they are capable of. The children are my teachers.”
