Event Description
There are a lot of people who feel that zombie films may have outlived themselves but just refuse to die when they should. It's true that there are many terrible ones out there. But when the good ones come along -- where the zombie mythos evolves like it does in 28 Days Later or The Girl With All The Gifts, they get their teeth right into your brain and never let go.
In this particular evolution of zombies, the source of the outbreak is fungal and it has turned all the people of the world into shambling "hungries". Oddly though, some children remain high functioning despite being infected. In a distant UK outpost the remnants of a fragmented military unit (Glenn Close, Gemma Arterton and Paddy Considine) run a lone operation, capturing these children and studying them in hopes of a cure. As you can guess, one child in particular, Melanie, would almost be a perfectly normal high achieving child if she didn't constantly have to be masked and chained to a desk. But whether her gifts are a salvation or damnation remains to be seen, as do the last hopes for humanity.
Sennia Nanua's playful performance as Melanie is deliciously malevolent in its innocence and has already earned her critical nods. Perhaps this is a new direction for frightening little girls in cinema?
