Event Description
Uproarious comedy, marvelous music, and wildly colourful sets and costumes all combine for a hugely entertaining evening that is as bracing as a bobsled ride, in Vancouver Opera’s production of Rossini’s The Italian Girl in Algiers, January 26 to February 2, 2008 at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre.
Imagine Amelia Earhart meeting the Marx Brothers in a riotous harem in old Algiers, and you’ll get a picture of VO’s very funny production, which, thanks to a clever set design, literally opens up before your eyes.
The stellar all-Canadian cast includes mezzo-soprano Allyson McHardy as Isabella, in her VO début, Vancouver’s favourite lyric tenor, John Tessier, as Lindoro, bass Randall Jakobsh as Mustaphà, baritone Hugh Russell as Tadeo, and soprano Sookhyung Park as Elvira.
