Makana

Born and raised on the island of Oahu, Makana began his musical journey at the age of 11. After studying under the Hawaiian slcak key legend, Sonny Chillingworth, Makana began playing professionally at age 14. This renowned slack key guitarist, singer and composer incorporates elements of folk, rock, and traditional Hawaiian music to create innovative sounds yet to be established in the music industry

His debut album, released in 1999, won Best World Music Album at the Hawaii Music Awards. Makana has released 5 records, contributed to the Grammy-nominated album "Hawaiian Slack Key Kings I & II," and his instrumental, "Deep in an Ancient Hawaiian Forest", is featured in the Oscar-winning film, The Decendents. He recently collaborated with music producer, Ron Nevinson, and winning composer, Jeff Bova, on the creation of a collection of work to be released soon.

Makana created a fundraiser through KickStarter.com to independently raise money for his upcoming release; 'Ripe' due out in fall of 2013. Honua Kai Resort & Spa is honored to sponsor him in the endeavor. In return, Honua Kai Resort & Spa received Executive Producer credit on the album, as well as this private concert.

He is also involved with Maui School Garden Network and Maui Food Bank. His newest venture, Sangrita Grill & Bar, is scheduled to open in Kaanapali this fall.
