About our host:
Jamie Oosterhuis (she/her) is a multidisciplinary artist working on unceded Lkwungen territories at the University of Victoria. She is in her final year of the Visual Arts Honours program. While photo and video have been groundwork mediums for her, Jamie’s current interests lie within recreating historical garments as a way to connect to Dutch, Irish and Scottish ancestral traditions. By first using historical patterns and materials, she is then able to reconstruct the same garments with updated techniques and explore various modern fabrics. Jamie is fascinated by forgotten beauty, labour and techniques of creation, as well as the functional or anti-functional purposes within these pieces. Through the wearing and documentation of these garments, she attempts to understand how these historical pieces can be worn by her modern body on lands that are not hers. Jamie is conscious of the history of her ancestors upon these lands and she is set on questioning how this continuously shapes her work.
