We are thrilled to welcome Alex Zhang Hungtai (Dirty Beaches, Love Theme) to Victoria.

Since retiring his project Dirty Beaches, Zhang has been focusing on explorations of improvised music, free jazz, and his new role as a composer of soundtracks for film. His latest musical output predominantly works with saxophone, synthesizers, percussion, and piano, furthering his research on ritualistic music of liminality. Solo output aside, he is also a member of an experimental trio with Portuguese musicians David Maranha and Gabriel Ferrandini, based in Lisbon. Zhang currently lives in Los Angeles and is also working as an actor in independent films.

War-torn industrial, experimental R&B, and visceral ambience are unified under the banner of Military Genius, an audiovisual project that mirrors the political and existential turmoil of our times. Spreading a message of peace amidst the turbulence, Military Genius blends rigid composition and free-form noise, producing meditations on sound as abstract representation of real-life experience.

The venue entrance has no stairs, but has a narrow hallway. Washrooms are gender neutral, but unfortunately no accessible washroom is available. Please respect the space and your fellow show attendees. If you have any questions regarding accessibility, please email [email protected].

This event will take place on unceded Coast Salish Territories, specifically of the Lekwungen and WSÁNEĆ peoples. As we focus on building artistic and cultural bridges, we acknowledge the rich cultural history of the many peoples and rituals that have been affected by the ongoing process of dispossession and colonialism. We hold this understanding in our interactions and engagements with this land and its people.
