OneTree Call for Submissions
2019-2020
“A fallen tree should never die quietly, never mind who is around to hear it.”
The oneTree exhibit was created in collaboration with the Bateman Foundation and Live Edge Design to express the economic value of one tree and to promote local and emerging artists on Vancouver Island. With the overwhelming success of the 2015 & 2017 events, the Bateman Foundation and Live Edge Design are partnering once again to launch oneTree 2019.
The oneTree exhibit is looking for Expressions of Interest from custom artisans to make jewelry, musical instruments, kitchenware furniture, turnings, sculpture and other functional and non-functional art. While art created from material other than wood may be considered, the overwhelming essence of the project must be about the 200-year-old Big Leaf Maple that was salvaged in Cowichan, British Columbia. Other art forms including, but not limited to, music, poetry and dance are eligible. Collaborative creations are also welcome.
Information about the tree (pictures and story) can be found at
http://www.onetreeproject.ca and will be updated throughout the submission process.

Artist’s Obligations
1. Once selected by the Exhibit Review Committee, each artist must select a participation level (i.e. bronze, silver or gold) and submit their registration fee and required registrations forms.
2. Chosen artisans will work with Live Edge Design to choose the appropriate piece of wood from the project tree. Availability is on a first come, first serve basis. Green wood can be chosen upon artist selection; dry wood will be kiln-dried and ready for choosing by May 2019. There will be a cost of $5 per board foot for green material, $7/board foot for kiln-dried Uniform Wood, and $15 per board foot for kiln-dried figured wood. Wood purchases go toward the cost of salvaging, milling, kiln-drying, and surfacing the wood. Pricing covers the cost of all or some of salvaging, milling, kiln-drying, and routing the wood.
3. Each artist must provide photographs and/or video during the production of their oneTree submission.
4. Artists who choose the Gold participation level will be required to work with MediaOne to document the progress and story behind their piece of art.
5. Artists must assist in circulating the promotional material (as provided by the Bateman Foundation and Live Edge Design) through their networks in order to enhance interest in and attendance of the exhibit.
6. Artists will retain copyright and ownership of their product, but are also obligated to allow the piece to be included in the exhibit and sold at the end of oneTree.
7. The piece must be available for sale as part of the exhibit with the artist receiving 75% of the sales proceeds when the artwork is sold. The remaining 25% will go to the Foundation to support their mandate of connecting all people to nature. Unsold pieces will be returned to the artist after the exhibit.
