WISE, Robert Allan Born March 30th 1949, Victoria, B.C. An ideas man, designer and sculptor, Bob died at home on October 22nd, 2010 with wife Valerie and dear friends Tom and Shelley Lietaer at his side. We asked our close friend Jane Wright, who died earlier this year, to help Bob, which she did at 11:30 p.m. Predeceased by his father Allan, Bob is survived by his wife Valerie, his mother Vera, his sons Richard and Nicholas (Adriana), precious grandchildren Elitza, Ben, and Natalia, sister Judy, brother David and family, along with a motley crew of cousins and in-laws. Bob was one of a kind. He jammed a lot of living into his sixty-one years. In his childhood, Bob terrorized Esquimalt with Mike Herold often at his side. Later, Bob raced Hudson Hornets at Western Speedway, worked as a cryogenic technician at TRIUMF after graduating from BCIT, founded Waterglass Studios, earned an Honours BFA in his forties, and an MFA in 2008. He created numerous pieces of art and had art shows across the country. He renovated several homes and an old wooden boat, Calypso. In typical Bob Wise fashion, his final project, the restoration of the brick building on the corner of Bay St. and Catherine St. in Vic West, was left unfinished. Without Bob's insightful, but often tangential ideas, his family will make sure that this project does actually get finished. Bob enjoyed several trips to Cuba; he loved the pulse of Havana. He was a judge at the Coney Island Mermaid Parade and he parasailed over the Bulgarian Black Sea coast while recovering from a hip replacement. Bob was a scavenger of interesting objects and an embellisher of stories. Those who knew him well will remember that he was never without a pen in his pocket ready to sketch out the next great idea. Many wonderful days were enjoyed at our cottage in Mill Bay, feasting on prawns and crabs fresh out of the Saanich Inlet, spending long lazy days working on the NY Times crossword, tormenting Tom, his longsuffering bridge partner, cooking for good friends and enjoying a glass of wine or a cold beer on the deck while keeping time by the passage of the Mill Bay ferry. There were too many important people in Bob's life to mention them all. Mowry Baden and the late Roland Brener were his mentors. Al Breen was always there, from pit crew to best man, from floor layer to "Office " transporter. Daniel Laskarin, Bob Gifford, Rob Youds, Dan Wilkin, Derek Andrews, Jeff Davis, John Cole, Grant Watson, David Gifford, Phil Henry, Bruce Wilkin, Sandra Meigs and Laurie MacMillan all had special connections with Bob. We owe our eternal gratitude to Laurie for rearranging her life to become Bob's primary caregiver during the month-long bone marrow transplant procedure in Vancouver. Thank you to Dr. Bryan Murray, Dr. Donna Cuthbert, the nurses at RP1 and the angels from the palliative home care team. Special thanks to Vicki Mulligan, Tom and Shelley Lietaer, Colleen Walton, Kieran Bridge, Kristin Marrs, Judy Wise, and the gang at Sandy Beach, for all of your help and support. An open house will be held November 27th from 1:00 to 4:00 at 505 Catherine Street to share stories. A party in Bob's memory will be held next year (date to be announced) when the renovations to the Vic West building are complete. In lieu of flowers, a contribution in Bob's memory to PEERS would be appreciated. #1 744 Fairview Road, Victoria, BC, V9A 5T9. Whenever you go through the arrivals area at the Victoria Airport, look up and marvel at Bob's creative genius. Sleep well my love. 608158
