Constance Cooke

Constance Cooke: is a Canadian Dance Artist residing in Victoria British Columbia, who enjoys the privilege of living and working in Coast Salish Territory. Her choreographic works for stage and screendance have been presented in Canada, the United States, Mexico, England and Germany. Her work has attracted and cultivated curious, open and intelligent audiences for contemporary and experimental work for over 25 years.

In British Columbia, Cooke’s works have been presented by Dancing on the Edge, The Reel Film Festival, The American Dance Festival, Romp, Dance Matters, Fleck Dance Theatre- Dance Ontario, Dance Victoria and more. Cooke has self‐produced her own work for close to 20 years including: full length‐works, mixed‐programmes with other artists, and site‐specific projects. She has been commissioned to create works for Canadian Dance Companies and Independent Dance Artists alike.

Cooke is Artistic Director of the newly formed SOS Dance (Seen On Site, Stage and Screen) and Co-Director of Dance For The Camera. Cooke teaches choreography for the frame. She has taught at the CanAsian Dance Festival in alliance with Kaeja d’dance, at Hub 14 in Toronto, in Winnipeg at WCD and in Victoria at the D4 The Camera Intensive. She has created site- specific works for both indoor and outdoor venues, including structured improvisations for and sometimes with Fringe audiences.

Cooke has worked directly with the Victoria Community creating a Salmon Run Flash Mob with non‐dancers and dancers for Copenhagen 350. Last season Cooke premiered Brace 4, with Arash Khakpour and Walter Kubanek at DOTE, worked at the Gage Art Gallery presenting an interactive paper and metal installation that audience members where invited to dance and interact with, and with the Greater Art Gallery Of Victoria for their mega event Urbanite, where she had the delight work with Jamie Nesbitt and dancer Lara Barclay.

Cooke is a guest choreographer, teacher, and mentor with Professional Training Programmes, Intensives and Mentorship Programmes, including Winnipeg Contemporary Dancers PTP, Vancouver’s Restless Production, Cadence Dance in Toronto, Victoria Academy Of Ballet, and The Victoria School Of Contemporary Dance. Where in 2015 Cooke resigned as Artistic Director in order to focus full time on research, creation and leading master classes.

Cooke has been the recipient of numerous awards, scholarships and grants from The Canada Council of the Arts, BC Arts Council, The Manitoba Arts Council, The Vancouver Foundation, BC Hydro and Dance Victoria.
