Call for Public Art – Centre for Trades Education and Innovation

Posted by: ArtsVictoria.ca
Camosun is currently the second largest trades educator in British Columbia’s public post-secondary system. The college is currently building a 30 million dollar trades training facility on our Interurban Campus and has plans to renovate existing trades education space. We are excited about this building project for many reasons, but first among them is our desire to place Camosun Trade’s students and programs in first rate learning spaces that communicate the importance of Trades Education to the province, the community and to the college community.

We are seeking proposals from British Columbia artists that reflect the vision of our Centre for Trades Education and Innovation (CTEI) as a place that respects the Indigenous cultures and traditions of this land. A place that lifts up and celebrates the proud tradition of trades education.

A place that creates opportunities for synergy between Trades Education, Applied Research, Visual Arts and other college programs.

Camosun College is seeking submissions from qualified British Columbia artists with a proven record in public art installations to propose an installation in June 2016 at the Centre for Trades Education and Innovation, Interurban Campus. This is the second posting of this opportunity, following an earlier brief document. The call for proposals seeks work that celebrates trades education, our students, and the transformative nature of education. Representation of our core values of recognition of the First Nations territory on which we live, work, and learn will be an essential component of the installation. Submitting artists should outline how they may involve Trades and Visual Arts students in the development and/or construction of the installation.

The site indicated has limited access to power. The installation should be consistent and appropriate with the space and location – in relationship to the new CTEI building which will open in fall 2015. The call seeks work that is positive, creates relationship with college students, trades and visual arts faculty and that creates a visual anchor for the building entrance.

The successful artist or artist team will be responsible for the creation, fabrication and installation of the art and will work with the college’s “Cultural Enhancement Committee” and college Facilities Services for successful installation. This project is funded through the college’s

The total budget available to the artist (or artist team) is $75, 000. Artwork budget must be inclusive of all costs including (but not limited to) artist fees, studio overhead, consultant fees, artwork fabrication, site preparation, travel, transportation, installation, all taxes and general

This public art call is open to all professional artists or teams, which have the demonstrated creative expertise and technical skills to manage all phases of the process from design development through to installation in coordination with the project contractors and college staff.

The accepted project will be subject to approval by the College’s Executive and will be recommended to executive by the Cultural Enhancement Committee at the college.

Instructions to Proponents:

It is the artist’s responsibility to ensure that the College receives its proposal prior to the stated closing time. The college may nevertheless choose to consider late proposals. The College does not accept facsimile, electronic mail, original artworks, or other unsealed submissions.

Submission packages will not be returned. One (1) electronic (ie. PC compatible CD or USB) and one (1) hard copies of the proposal are to be submitted and clearly marked on the outside of the envelope or box as follows:
