Learn the art of chain maille with local designer/maker Mead Simon.
Mead Simon started making chain maille because he happened to be working at a Rennaisance Faire in Wisconsin and met someone who wanted to teach him. When he first learned, he thought it was the most boring thing he had ever done. There were only those few basic weaves that people were doing, and everything was centered around various armour techniques that were hundreds of years old. It seemed that almost nobody was looking at new applications for this wonderful medium, aside from the woman who taught him, and a few higher end fashion designers. Mead was insatiably curious about this medium, and wanted to see how far he could push it.
One of Mead's favourite things is to go through knitting books and see how he can duplicate various stitching patterns in chain. Most of the work that Mead does is still in terms of jewelry but he has more recently been exploring fashion design. You can often find Mead and his work at the Bastion Square market! In fact many of you might have already met him...
Why chain maille? Because Mead feels as if he can do just as much with chain as he can with a pencil or paints. The medium is immaterial. It is the creativity and the exploration behind it that counts!
You will need 2 good pairs of pliers for this workshop. Pliers will be available to purchase from the instructor for $15 a pair. We also recommend that you bring a pair of gloves [that have some grip - like sporting gloves] as this will make working more comfortable for you.
During this workshop you will complete a bracelet to take home.
